Principal, San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE)                                2001-2007

Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS)

JCCS is a consortium of 80 schools that work in conjunction with 42 local school districts with an annual student population of 13,200 at-risk, neglected and judicially supervised minors. Created and

presented staff development workshops and seminars, district-wide service learning programs, cutting-edge career curriculum and government, corporate and business partnerships during 21 years of service.

Regional Administrator of California State Standards aligned educational programs.  Operational and instructional leader for staff of 53 teachers, teacher assistants, clerical and probation officers, in the implementation of P-12 educational programs, regionally accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), including Academies, community, institutional and grant funded schools. Liaison with countywide collaborative agencies providing direct services to students.  Responsible for direct lobbying of California legislators in Sacramento with California Department of Education representatives to continue support of Senate Bill 1095 grant funding.

Program Administrator, JCCS Academies                                                              1998-2001

Developed and secured grant funding (Senate Bill 1095 High Risk Youth) for innovative, thematic, community based educational programs. Negotiated and secured onsite school partnerships with San Diego area businesses, educational agencies and community institutions. Program components included high school diploma advancement, service learning, vocational internships, employment and concurrent college enrollment opportunities. Created, developed and implemented the following onsite schools as program administrator:

  • San Diego Zoo (Environmental Science Academy)

  • SeaWorld (Marine Science Academy)

  • Escondido Center for the Performing Arts (Arts Academy)

  • Southwestern Community College (College Prep Academy)

Vice Principal, JCCS East Region                                                                           1997-1998

Ensured that school programs and curricula were implemented as directed by the Principal in order to maximize student learning experiences by providing programs that exhibited multicultural awareness, gender sensitivity, and racial and ethnic diversity.Managed professional development for administrative and support staff; oversaw the use and production of educational records, court documents and state materials while guaranteeing and maintaining confidentiality among staff.

 

Teacher on Special Assignment, JCCS                                                                    1996-1997

Developed and implemented district-wide School to Career programs in conjunction with local businesses and corporations that combined relevant and realistic experiences and skills with traditional learning, resulting in student access to employment; wrote a companion curriculum and resource manual.

 

Mentor Teacher, JCCS                                                                                                        1993-1996

Created and implemented a district-wide Volunteer Corps service learning program specifically designed for high-risk students; the program has serviced over 4,000 students and provided over 75,000 hours of community service throughout San Diego County; wrote curriculum manual, developed and produced media kit including video.

Provided innovative learning experiences through multi-subject curricula for high-risk students in both juvenile institutions and community school settings leading to high school diploma or GED.
